Dear St Michael’s Church Family,

I’ve just come back from a wonderful week away feeling much refreshed.  Thank you very much to Ruby who led our service in church last weekend.  I hope you too are able to take some time over the next few weeks to rest and relax, whether at home or away on holiday.

The terrible explosion in the Lebanon has been very much in the news this week.  Several aid agencies have launched special appeals for funds to help those affected by the disaster in Beirut.

They include Christian Aid, who are responding now, delivering essential items to those directly impacted by the explosion, including hot meals, water, hygiene and disinfection materials, clothes, mattresses, and cleaning supplies. You can donate online to help ensure that they can keep providing these vital packages.  See the Christian Aid website.

Face masks are now mandatory in church for congregations, but we now have some updated guidance from the Church of England indicating that masks need not be worn by those conducting services or by those who are assisting (ie reading the Bible readings or leading the prayers).   I shall therefore only wear a mask while I am giving the bread at Holy Communion.  Members of the congregation do not need to wear a mask as they come forward to receive the bread at Communion.

This week our summer guest speaker is Bishop Alan, the Bishop of St Albans.

Many thanks also to Anne Cooke, Geoff Cooper, Keith Price, Janet Greenwell and Angela Price for their contributions to our online service today.   You will find the link for the service here.

I’m sorry to have to announce the funerals of Nick Luke on 20 August and Lavinia Harris on 21 August. Please remember their families in your prayers.

Please see below a note from Mark Tomkins about Bike ‘N Hike – on 12 September

YOUR CHURCH NEEDS YOU!

(Serious bit!)
For many years St Michael’s has supported the Annual Bike ’n' Hike for Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trust very generously.
For a long time we have raised well over £1000 each year. Half of all the money raised comes directly back to St Michael’s; and we have also benefitted in receiving grants from the Trust towards the costs of our building projects.
As we have heard, Churches across the country are struggling for funds due to the current situation, including St Michael’s, with continuing running costs and a less than normal income.

(FUN BIT :-)
We can all help to raise a smile and some funds supporting this year’s Bike ’n' Hike which is planned for Saturday 12 September.
The main organisers are keen for the event to go ahead but with a bit of a difference, as we must follow the Government Guidelines.
We are not allowed to go off in large groups - cycling or walking, and many of the Churches will not be open at all for refreshments or to visit inside.
Diana has agreed that we can go off in small groups of no more than 6, as long as no further Government restrictions are introduced.

We have a plan…
Simon has very kindly offered to organise any walkers that would like to participate into small walking groups, and plan a short route to visit some local Churches.
Valerie & Hazel are happy to take any of our younger Church members that would like to join in, on a local ride to visit Churches and have a picnic lunch together.
Neil Marchant & myself are setting ourselves a bigger challenge! We thought we would plan a bike route trying to encompass as many churches as possible across MK.

I am awaiting news from the event organiser how sponsorship is planned to work this year.  We look forward to your support.

In the meantime please do let me know if you would like to take part, either walking or cycling in small groups.

I look forward to hearing from you

Many Thanks

Mark

While the official deadline for those who are shielding has now passed, we are still urged to be careful about what we do, and no one should feel under any pressure to come to church.

With my prayers for us all for a blessed Sunday’s worship together wherever we are,

Diana
